Chadwick Boseman’s death left “a huge hole” on the set of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.
Winston Duke – who reprises his role as warrior M’Baku in the upcoming sequel – appeared in the original 2018 film alongside the late actor, since Boseman died in 2020 after going undercover four times. Getting back on set for the first time was difficult – the battle against cancer.
He said on the “Jemele Hill Is Unbothered” podcast: “It’s something we have to grapple with every day on the set because when he shows up, there’s a big hole.
“You feel it every day. You don’t feel like he’s there. He’s a very gentle being, with power and power and scope.”
Winston recalled how the late actor didn’t have a “big ego” on set, and his “impact” on the film was felt long after his death.
He added: “You know he’s there, but he doesn’t have to say anything. He’s not walking around with his big ego…
“When they’re there, you don’t realize the impact. But when they’re not, it’s palpable. You essentially feel it, and that’s the experience of being on set every day for a year.”
His comments come after director Ryan Coogler recently described “Wakanda Forever” as “lost on it.”
He explained: “I think the film has a fog of disorientation, and the anamorphic lens distorts the image a little bit.
“Sometimes when you experience a great loss, it distorts the way you see the world. All we’re after is to make it tactile, even if it feels like a dream.
“This movie is supposed to feel like a really crazy dream you’d have, but everything feels like it really exists.”
