Grove, Oklahoma — Many widely distributed birds are native to northeastern Oklahoma, including the belted kingfisher and American goldfinch.
But every year, American white pelicans migrate to the area, and from February to May, the Cherokees call the Great Lakes their home.
Hence the aptly named Pelican Festival. Now in its 39th year, the festival begins Thursday and runs through Sunday at Wolf Creek Park off Highway 59 in Grove.
Carnival at Fun Time Shows kicks off Thursday, while vendor booths, food trucks, live entertainment and other family events take place Friday and Saturday, according to a release from festival officials and the Great Lakes Association.
The Pelican Festival parade begins Saturday at 9:30 a.m., and the Grove Masonic Lodge will again host a car show during the festival later in the day. There will also be balloon animals on Saturday, courtesy of Balloon E. Dude, food trucks and adorable animals at the Park Oasis Animal Adventure Park.
Jay Crank, executive director of the Great Lakes Association, said his team has been working on the event since last October and he hopes to bring another memorable event to the Great Lakes region.
A total of about 7,000 people are expected to visit the Grand Lake and Grove areas during the festival.
“I really don’t know if we can bring a better event than last year, but we’ll do everything we can,” Cranke said in a press release. “We’ve had a lot of fun with our friends at Grand Lake for a few days. We really have something for everyone.”
