The government stated that at least eight soldiers were injured in the attack near the country’s border with Mali.

The Burkina Faso government stated that 12 Burkina Faso soldiers were killed and 8 injured in an ambush by suspected rebels near Burkina Faso’s border with Mali.

The Minister of Communications Ousseni Tamboura “strongly condemned the barbaric attack” near the village of Dounkoun, Toeni commune in Sulu province on Sunday, the latest in a series of attacks on the borders of Mali and Niger.

Tambula said in a statement on Monday that “members of the ground forces and rapid intervention force GARSI were ambushed in the Boucle du Mouhoun area in the northwest.” “Temporary casualties indicate that 12 soldiers fell and 8 were injured.”

The statement added that seven soldiers were missing after the ambush but were found at dawn on Monday. One of them was injured in the thigh, but in stable condition.

“The clean-up operation is ongoing and the wounded have been evacuated,” said the minister who is also a government spokesman.

President Roque Marc Christian Kabor said in a tweet: “We continue to uncompromisingly launch the war imposed on our country by obscurantism and brutal forces.”

The president also “pays tribute to our soldiers who died in Toeni and helped the wounded recover quickly.”

A security source told AFP that the attack took place around 3 pm (15:00 GMT), adding that the vehicle had been destroyed or captured during the ambush initiated by what he called the rebel fighters.

“This is of course revenge for the deaths of two jihadist leaders active in the same Boucle du Mouhoun area. They were neutralized. [on Saturday] Provided by the armed forces,” the source added.

Sources said he identified the two leaders as Sidibe Ousmane (also known as Mouslim) and spiritual leader Bande Amadou.

The government said in a statement on Sunday that after the exchange of fire between Diamaso and Buni in Kosi province, they were killed by a special force.
