Abu Dhabi Centre highlights role of translation as cross-cultural bridge |

On 29 September, the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) celebrated this year’s International Day of Translation, with Nobel Laureate Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio’s Arabic Language translation becomes the focus.

The Kalima Reading Club event, held in partnership with the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi, discusses the novels of French author and 2008 Nobel Laureate in Literature Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio “quarantine area”.

Hosted by Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, the event pays tribute to language professionals and acknowledges the global importance of translation.

“In celebrating this International Day of Translation, we have helped to underscore the importance of translation in the exchange of cultures and knowledge, fostering dialogue between people and bringing people closer together,” said the chair of the Ministry’s ALC Ali Bin Tamim said the Ministry of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, is committed to promoting the Arabic language through culture, education, research and arts.

The discussion highlighted the Arabic translation of Clézio’s novel and the Arabic translation of French philosopher Edgar Morin’s book Humanity, Human Identity, and other books translated from French to Arabic.

Mohamed Ait Mihoub, a Tunisian novelist and professor of Arabic language and literature at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, and Hana Sobhi, professor of French language and literature at Sorbonne University, spoke at the event.

Quarantine is one of four French literary works selected by the Kalima project to study epidemics. Translated by Jordanian translator and author Noha Abu Arqoub, with “Le Hussard Sur le Toit” by Jean Giono, “La Guerre Insaisissable” by Jean-Marc Moura and “Géopolitique du Moustique” by Erik Orsenna and Isabelle De Saint-Aubin .

In “Quarantine,” Le Clézio describes the fate of three travelers in the late 19th century who sailed to Mauritius to claim their family’s inheritance. On the way, a smallpox epidemic broke out among passengers and crew, forcing them all to be quarantined on an unremarkable island. Their stay quickly turned into a painful incarceration experience, exacerbated by the passenger’s behavior and attitude.

The Kalima Project will publish a collection of poetry translations by Noha Abu Arqoub, which also includes Carlos Liscano’s Writers and Others, Augusto Monterosso’s Complete Works and Other Stories, British playwright Edward Bond’s ‘The Writer and the Other’ Cannons on Earth” and more…

“Our belief is that it advances effective cultural work in Abu Dhabi and strengthens its leadership on the regional and international cultural map, supports a new generation of translators, and enriches the culture and science of Arabic, ” ALC said.

International Translation Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of translation and language, which plays an important role in the development of society.

This day is an opportunity to pay tribute to language professionals who play a key role in bringing nations together and fostering dialogue, understanding and cooperation among nations.
