[ad_1]

LONDON, Oct. 10 (AP) A hospital neonatal nurse has been charged with killing seven babies and attempting to kill 10 others by deliberately poisoning two with insulin, a British prosecutor said Monday.

Lucy Letby, 32, has been charged with the murders of five baby boys and two girls and the attempted murder of five boys while working at the Countess Hospital of Chester in north-west England between 2015 and 2016 and 5 girls. Letby had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Speaking at Manchester Crown Court, prosecutor Nick Johnson said there had been a significant increase in the number of babies found dead or suffering “severe catastrophic collapse” in hospitals from 2015.

“There are no unstable babies who suddenly deteriorate at all. Sometimes babies who are sick but then get better will suddenly deteriorate for no reason,” he told the jury.

He said police were called and reviewed when doctors could not find the cause, and it turned out that someone in the neonatology unit had poisoned the two baby boys with insulin two days after they were born.

Johnson said Lightby was on duty when the two were poisoned. He added that prosecutors believe the collapse and death of all 17 infants was the work of Lebbie, who he described as having a “constant malicious presence in the hospital’s neonatal ward when the children collapsed or died. “.

Families of some of Letby’s alleged victims sat in court, with Letby’s parents also present.

The trial is expected to last for weeks, if not months.

Police launched an investigation into the deaths of multiple babies in the hospital in May 2017. Lebby was arrested three times in connection with the death before being charged in November 2020. (Associated Press)
