World News | Odisha MP Aparajita Sarangi Elected Asia Pacific Group’s Inter-Parliamentary Union Panel Member

Kigali [Rwanda]October 13 (ANI): The Lok Sabha MP from Odisha Aparajita Sarangi has been elected to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Executive Committee from the Asia Pacific Group (APG) countries.

Sarangi won 12 of the 18 available votes in the election. Elections were held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Sarangi MP took to Twitter to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nominating her for the post.

Sarangi will represent India on the 15-member union executive committee.

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar expressed his wishes to Sarangi.

Jaishankar said in a tweet: “Congratulations to @ApraJitasarangi on her election victory. Thank you to all the countries that supported her.”

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated MPs on their election victory.

“Congratulations to Smt @AprajitaSarangi, MP, for winning #IPU Executive Council Membership by a stunning 12 votes, 18 votes during #IPU145 in Kigali, Rwanda. Good luck to you as a prestigious institution. @DrSJaishankar,” He wrote on Twitter.

The Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Rajya Sabha Vice-President Harivansh, is currently attending the 145th IPU Congress in Kigali, Rwanda.

Parliament officials told ANI that Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Dr Sasmit Patra and Aparajita Sarangi attended the IPU Council meeting.

The Asia Pacific Group (APG), of which India is a member, will elect a member from the Asia Pacific Group countries to join the IPU Executive Committee.

“The APG organized a secret ballot to decide the group’s nomination for the above vacancy. Aparajita Sarangi received overwhelming support from the APG member parliament and won the election by an overwhelming majority,” the official told ANI.

Parliamentary officials further told ANI that MP Kartikeya Sharma Rajya Sabha from Harayana participated in a meeting entitled “Parliament promotes local and regional development in countries with high levels of international migration and stops all forms, including state-sponsored, human trafficking and human rights violations”.

He added: “Kartikeya Sharma, MP, Dr Sasmit Patra, MP and attended the meeting of the IPU Youth MPs Forum.

Vishnu Dayal Ram, MP participated in the debate of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development on the theme “Parliamentary efforts to achieve carbon neutral forests”. The Indian parliamentary delegation also voted to include urgent items on the agenda of the General Assembly. (ANI)
