World Sight Day is coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), a London-based organisation with nearly 200 members including non-governmental organisations (NGOs), civil society, business organisations, professional bodies and research institutes working on the prevention of blindness.

Why celebrate World Sight Day?

The IAPB said the day is observed internationally. Here are some reasons to observe it:

1. This is an opportunity to draw the world’s attention to the global issue of eye health.

2. It raises awareness among individuals, families and communities.

3. It is a platform to influence decision makers to prioritize eye health programs.

4. It advocates for the global need for health services.

Eye health affects education, employment, quality of life, poverty and other sustainable development goals. Due to its holistic impact on overall quality of life, this day aims to encourage governments, businesses, institutions and individuals to actively call for universal access to eye health.

past celebrations

In 2020, Queen Elizabeth II took part in the festivities, according to the IAPB. In 2021, more than 3 million pledges of Love Eyes were recorded worldwide.
