The Hollister High School Drama Department invites the community to join them next weekend for a really fun time at their 6th annual Haunted Theater.
The annual HHS Tiger Theatre Company fundraiser will be held Friday and Saturday, October 21-22, from 9pm to midnight.
Admission to the Haunted Theater is $5 per person.
Kyle Bradley, head of the drama department at Hollister High School, shared that hosting the creepy fundraiser has become a tradition in the drama department.
“We are really excited to present it again. This is an opportunity for students in our department and leaders in our department to present a completely student-led event. They bring these ideas together Throwing in, we showed our best attempt at a legal haunted house in the school,” Bradley said. “We use the public spaces and hallways, especially the theatre and all the different nooks and crannies we have. Whatever the theme of the year, we set a different vibe in each space. This year our theme is the horrors of history, So they’ve chosen different events in history to present something creepy, hoping to scare some people as they go through it.”
Preparations for this year’s event began about two months ago, when they started brainstorming on this year’s theme.
“Once we decided on our idea, I allowed my theater company officials to host the audition. We were open to any middle and high school students who might be interested in getting involved,” Bradley said. “After the audition, we got together and started meeting in specific groups of people who were specifically assigned to the haunted house. Once our idea was close to becoming a reality, we would have several rehearsals during the week and A public-facing event will be held on Friday and Saturday nights.”
Bradley recalls the theme of the 2022 Haunted Theater and how it led to the idea for this year.
“Last year we made films. We focused on different films that could be distorted and veered in dark directions. It was an interesting opportunity for them to do things like Jumanji and Pirates of the Caribbean. They tried Doing a creepy Wizard of Oz, I thought it was an interesting idea,” Bradley said. “This year they’re excited to show a different era and era in history. I think it should be fun for people who are scared and enjoy that part of it and maybe get a little history lesson in some way.”
Bradley explained that the inspiration for the Haunted Theater fundraiser came from multiple places.
“We heard that some other schools and different departments, like another school’s agriculture department had a haunted theatre and they found it to be a really good fundraiser for them. I was involved in that at the university , it turned out to be a great opportunity to raise money for our department,” Bradley said. “It turns out that people are really excited to come and be a part of it. I think in October and the spooky season, people love going to haunted houses. It’s a thing that attracts a big part of the public and it’s a great opportunity to raise some money.”
With the funds raised during the event, Bradley shared that as a theater company, they were able to do more throughout the school year.
“This year, like last year, we’re going to have three major stage productions. We’re going to have a fall play, a winter play, and then a spring musical. Proof of rights to all these shows we’re doing is our The huge amount of money that’s done and then everything needed to dress up all the students and the lights and sound and the production can really add up. Just having a big fundraiser like this at the beginning of the year really helps us get through the year, And be able to do everything we want.”
To complete the massive fundraiser, Bradley said they had a total of 45 students involved in every aspect of the event.
“We had students running in front of our house, checking out groups and making concessions, and reading out the rules and regulations we expected,” Bradley said. “Then we had a bunch of students in crazy costumes and makeup at events, a Jump out on the road to scare you.”
As young actors, Bradley shared how the event gave them a chance to stretch themselves and experience new challenges.
“I think they really enjoy the opportunity to express themselves creatively that way. We have a lot of students who come out to auction and they don’t necessarily want to be part of a musical or a play, but they want to be a play and they find it’s theirs way out,” Bradley said. “It’s just an event that attracts a lot of students who are interested in expressing creativity through makeup, costumes and characters, which are counterintuitive.”
The Haunted Theater is taking place inside Hollister High School, located at 2112 St. Highway BB in Hollister. Admission is $5 per person, cash only, at the door.Groups will be limited to five people and group check-in will begin at 8:30pm
