Greater Noida: A Greater Noida businessman has been wrongly detained at Abu Dhabi International Airport for misidentification.
Abu Dhabi police took away businessman Praveen Kumar, who had travelled to Switzerland, mistaking him for the criminal they were looking for. His wife was sent back to India.
Following the incident, his family sought help from the Gautam Budh Nagar District Government, the Uttar Pradesh Government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Atul Sharma, a resident of Habibpur village in Greater Noida, said his brother Praveen Kumar and sister-in-law Usha Sharma were traders in steel and cement. As a reward for his excellent performance, Ambuja Cement sent the couple on a trip to Switzerland.
They left Delhi on 11 October via Thomas Cook Tours Limited and will fly to Switzerland on Etihad Airways. They stopped at Abu Dhabi International Airport for a connecting flight to Switzerland.
Praveen is not affiliated with any criminals and has no pending cases against him. He added that he was a simple businessman who was wrongly detained by Abu Dhabi police because they misunderstood.
“There have been some misunderstandings with Abu Dhabi police. This is a wrongful conviction. Praveen Sharma has nothing to do with any crime. Their passports, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards and all other documents have been checked here. All this information has been sent to the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I hope Praveen Sharma will be sent back to India as soon as possible,” said DM Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj.
Sharma’s family is very upset by the incident and they have not heard from him or have any contact with him for many days.
