Vineyards, Utah — When Jyrl Oldham was declared cancer-free in August, she knew she had to do something big to celebrate.
Oldham, a mother of three from a Utah vineyard, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2021. She was pregnant at the time.
“After her daughter was born in August 2021, she started treatment as soon as possible,” said her friend Valeri Jones. “After nearly passing away during one of her treatments, she felt the need to take time off to prove it didn’t beat the cancer.”
Her family told her that when she beat cancer, they would send her to Hawaii.
When she, Jones, and another friend boarded a Southwest flight, she was surprised to find her husband had arranged for her a Southwest flight.
The captain announced via walkie-talkie: “I would like to say a special welcome to a special guest on today’s flight. We have a passenger traveling with us today to Hawaii to celebrate her victory over terminal breast cancer.
“She fought bravely and is now cancer free. Please join me in applauding her, Jyrl Oldham.”
in an interview “ABC World News tonight with David Muir,” “They didn’t know me, but they were all just — I could feel the love. I could feel the support,” Oldham said.
The information she got from it?
“You’re not alone. Having a lot of people behind you helps you become a lot stronger than you think.”
