Facial recognition error: Noida man detained at Abu Dhabi airport returns latest India

An Indian citizen who was wrongly detained in the UAE for wrongful identity arrived in India in the early hours of Sunday. Praveen Kumar, a Noida-based businessman In custody At Abu Dhabi airport on October 11, his face was matched with a “wanted man” in facial recognition software.

They couldn’t find a direct flight to Switzerland and boarded a flight from Delhi to Abu Dhabi, after which they were supposed to fly to their destination … they left on October 11 for a week-long trip,” said Atul Sharma, a relative of Kumar.

Usha said immigration authorities at the airport took their passports and visas before airport officials took them to a separate room.

“They told my husband that he would be detained because his face matched a criminal wanted by Abu Dhabi police,” she said.

The family frantically tweeted about their ordeal to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and other senior officials in the ministry for help in the matter.

After landing in India, Kumar said the airport’s CID detained him but let him leave for the first time. However, he was detained a second time on his way out.

“They kept me overnight, forced me to accept that I was another person, put me in a cell in the morning, took me to another city, held me and interrogated me again. Thank you to PM Modi and CM Adityanath for their quick action”, Kumar Said upon arrival in India, as quoted by ANI.
