A young woman has filed a lawsuit against her boyfriend, accusing her of borrowing Dh3.2 million from her to invest in a real estate business but refusing to pay her back.
The Arab woman said in her lawsuit that she had a relationship with the defendant when he asked her to lend him money to invest in a real estate project. She said the man convinced her that the business was profitable and that he would share the profits with her.
She said she trusted the defendant, gave him a check and transferred some of the money to his bank account. The total amount is as high as Dh3.2 million.
The plaintiff alleges that the man used some of the checks she gave her to buy some real estate projects.
She noted that she repeatedly asked the man to return the money to her, but he refused. This prompted her to drag him to the Abu Dhabi Family and Civil Administrative Claims Court.
The woman submitted copies of the checks she gave the man and other documents showing the cash being transferred into the defendant’s bank account as evidence in support of her claims.
In court, the defendant denied that the woman’s claim was a false accusation against him.
He said it was the plaintiff who owed him Dh2.8 million, which she had borrowed from him earlier, and that the cheque she showed the court was given to him by the woman before giving the cash as security.
The man asked for the case to be dismissed.
After hearing by both parties, the court dismissed the case on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
The judge said the plaintiff’s documents showing she transferred the money to the defendant’s bank account proved the fact that the money was transferred to him. However, the documents did not show that the reason for the assignment was to provide a loan to the defendant, especially since he claimed that the plaintiff was paying the debt.
