The UAE has been one of the most influential countries in developing the maritime industry, taking a competitive position among the best maritime hubs in the world.
Accompanied by its Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, Mohamed Khamis Al Kaabi, and Captain Saif Al Mheiri, Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Maritime, the official representative took part in the government-sponsored World Maritime Day Parallel Event (WMDPE) in Durban, South Africa to “New technology, green shipping” as the theme.
Regarding the UAE’s role in developing the global maritime industry, Al Kaabi said, “The UAE is one of the most influential countries in developing the maritime industry and has established itself as a pioneer among the world’s leading maritime hubs. As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ) Council, the country plays a key role in meeting regional and global maritime needs. We will continue to work with other Member States to advance the global maritime sector and strengthen the IMO’s role in supporting maritime transport in clean oceans Role in safety, security and efficiency. The UAE has played an effective role in fundamentally revising many of the resolutions that help develop and improve working systems to keep pace with global changes and the latest technological developments, especially with regard to green shipping.”

Al Kaabi added: “The theme of this year’s World Maritime Day parallel event is ‘New Technologies for Green Shipping’, requiring all countries to adopt zero- or low-carbon technologies, fuels and infrastructure. The shipping industry generates 2- 3%.
“As a result, the IMO has set a goal of reducing the industry’s carbon emissions by at least 40% by 2030, aiming for a 70% reduction by 2050 compared to 2008, and a reduction in total annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 At least 50%. In 2008, the aim is to phase them out as soon as possible in this century. By 2030, the technology and infrastructure of the new fuel must be ready for broad market uptake by the shipping industry to meet the IMO’s 2050 target. The delegation also attended a high-level ministerial roundtable to discuss key topics; such as challenges and opportunities for the international industry, strengthening capacity building and the IMO Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP).
