Dubai Airports on Wednesday predicted that Dubai International Airport (DXB) will achieve strong growth in the second half of this year after its passenger throughput of 10.6 million passengers in the first six months of 2021-despite travel restrictions affecting the main source of passengers throughout the second quarter market.
India continued to be the largest destination country for DXB in the first half of the year, with more than 1.9 million passengers. Pakistan ranks second with 700,074 customers, followed by Russia (406,209) and Egypt (401,361).
Other notable destination countries include Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United States. The top three cities in terms of traffic volume are Addis Ababa (354,804), followed by Cairo (345,886) and Moscow (344,175).
“In view of the strong recovery of global air travel, we started the second half of the year with a high profile. According to data from Dubai Airport, the passenger traffic at Dubai Airport in the second quarter totaled 4.9 million, bringing the half-year figure for the year to 10.6 million, a year-on-year contraction of 40.9%. Compared to before the Covid-19 pandemic, DXB currently serves 68% of destinations in 94% of countries on 70% of airlines.
In terms of the recovery of freight volumes approaching 2019 levels in the second quarter, freight continued to outperform the passenger sector. DXB recorded 571,568 tons of freight in the second quarter, pushing the freight volume to 1.1 million tons in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 27.7%.
