The UAE-UK Business Council will hold its 20th plenary meeting in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, where it will announce a partnership with the Cherie Blair Women’s Foundation to encourage support for women entrepreneurs in less developed countries.
The 100,000 Women programme has already seen the participation of more than 100 business leaders in the UAE and plans to expand in the coming year.
“This is a critical time to invest in women entrepreneurs, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are still a long way from achieving our global gender equality goals,” Barrister and author Ms Cherie Blair and UK The wife of former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair said in a statement.
“Through this new partnership, Cherie Blair Women’s Foundation looks forward to recruiting more talented mentors and supporters from the UAE, enabling our programs to reach more women entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries.”
Co-led by UAE Minister of State Ahmed Al Sayegh and Lord Udny-Lister, the event marked the anniversary of the signing of two major bilateral agreements: the UAE-UK Future Partnership and the Sovereign Investment Partnership.
The first of these aims to expand bilateral economic ties in areas such as technology, education, healthcare, and clean and renewable energy, with a special emphasis on the two countries working together to address global challenges.
The sovereign investment partnership between Mubadala and the UK Investment Office has made significant investments in UK technology, infrastructure and clean and renewable energy over the past 12 months and plans to remain involved for the remainder of the five months Momentum Year Plan.
Launch a climate and healthcare movement
In addition to seeking to advance women’s empowerment, the plenary will discuss urgent issues related to the environment and healthcare.
A white paper on the energy transition and bilateral events on decarbonization and cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment and care will be released.
“[The UK and UAE] Bilateral trade and investment relations are increasingly diversifying, and new opportunities for cooperation are emerging in areas rich in technology and innovation,” said Lord Oudney-Lister before the meeting.
“The role of the UAE-UK Business Council is to develop and share knowledge on these trends in order to realise the enormous potential unleashed by future partnerships and sovereign investment partnerships.”
This spirit of cooperation was also expressed by the UAE Ambassador to the UK, Mansoor Abulhoul.
“The relationship between the UAE and the UK continues to strengthen,” he said.
“By unlocking more economic opportunities together, we will be able to future-proof our societies and meet the world’s most pressing challenges.
“The UAE-UK Business Council plays a key role in strengthening the vital business and investment links between our societies in pursuit of our shared vision.”
