Little Simz received the 2022 Mercury Award.
The 28-year-old musician’s album “Sometimes I Might Be Introvert” won competition from the likes of Sam Fender, Harry Styles and Wet Leg at this year’s awards ceremony at the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo, London on Tuesday (18.10.22) Evening, hosted by Lauren Laverne.
Simz was declared the winner by Jamz Supernova and was given the trophy and a £25,000 cheque before closing the evening’s festivities.
When she took the stage, she was speechless at first, but then said, “Wow. I’m very, very overwhelmed and I’m so grateful.
“Glory to God – God thank you so much; thank my family here, my loved ones here.
“I want to thank Mercury so much for this incredible, incredible prize. I want to thank my brother and close collaborator Inflo – Flo [has] I’ve known me since childhood, he’s been by my side, and we made this album together.
“In the studio, sometimes I don’t know if I’m going to finish the record, I’m going through all the emotions… He’s stuck with me.”
She then praised the other nominees.
She added: “You’re all great, we’ve all made great albums, we’ve all changed people’s lives with our music, and that’s the most important thing, so it’s really for us, you know. What am I talking about?”
The record was selected for being “complete and sophisticated yet fully accessible”.
The jury said: “In a year that, to put it mildly, presented quite a few challenges, British and Irish music was more prosperous than ever. This made it difficult for the judges to take the 12 2022 Mercury Prize’s ‘Album of the Year’ “With the FREE NOW shortlist, simply because they have so much to offer.
“When it came to it, the judges were so impressed with Little Simz’s ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert’ that everyone could support it. This finished, complex but totally understandable album is one that keeps pushing itself human works.
“It tackles personal and political themes while juxtaposing them with complex and varied music. The Mercury Awards are designed to bring light to albums of lasting value and true artistry. ‘Sometimes I Can Be Introverted’ Both ‘”
Eleven of the 12 artists shortlisted – including Fergus McCready, Gwynneau, Jesse Buckley & Bernard Butler, Joy Crooks, Kojey Radical, Nova Twins, Self Esteem and Yard Act – Live performances at the ceremony, along with a filmed performance celebrating Harry’s nomination as he is currently on tour in the US.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for September 8, but was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth.
