Two people, whose countries of origin have not been disclosed, have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates trying to reach Europe through Dubai airport with fake Schengen visas.
In addition to the two people with forged Schengen visas, a third person was arrested because he helped them carry out their plans to enter the EU illegally, authorities revealed. Schengen Visa Information Network Report.
Khaleej Times explained that as soon as airport staff found out that the two were holding forged Schengen visas, they notified the authorities and the three were handed over to the Public Prosecution and then to the Criminal Court.
The same source noted that the two denied that their visas were forged. They told the passport-checking staff that they paid AED 25,000 (about 7,000 euros) to get the two visas from an unknown person who told them to come to UA and transfer the power of attorney to him, and then arrive in Europe.
Two people arrested for holding fake Schengen visas arrived in the UAE, handed their passports to strangers, and then received their visas a day before they planned to travel to the EU.
As for the third arrested person, Khaleej Times said he entered the UAE on a tourist visa and was asked to host the two men, rent them a house and take their passports. In addition, the third defendant stated that he had no knowledge of the counterfeiting activities.
After the relevant departments conducted necessary investigations, it was found that the three were involved in illegal activities and were sentenced to one month in prison. At the end of the one-month period, they will be deported back to their country.
Other countries have also reported cases of Schengen visa forgery. Earlier this month, Moroccan authorities say they have dismantled a network involved in forging documents needed to obtain a Schengen visa.
Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security said the group used to forge different documents to facilitate the illegal entry of third-country nationals into the EU.
In this particular operation, the bureau arrested 20 people and said through an official statement that the network facilitated obtaining Schengen visas in exchange for money. Still, it did not reveal how much each individual paid for the fake visas.
