Youtube and Twitter stated that they are taking steps to oppose the beautification, minimization or denial of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia.

According to a report by Radio Free Europe (RFE), Twitter and Google intend to remove content denying the Srebrenica genocide from their platforms.

RFE reported on Wednesday that Twitter and YouTube responded to the request of the Canadian Institute of Genocide (IRGC), stating that the two companies have formulated a clear policy to “sanction all hate speech.”

On July 28, IRGC sent a request to Google’s technology giants Twitter and YouTube, asking them to ban content on their platforms that “denies and distorts the truth about the Srebrenica genocide”.

“Those who deny the Srebrenica genocide are humiliating victims through your YouTube platform, causing pain and suffering to the survivors of the genocide, and in turn encouraging those who deny the genocide and possible future genocide The creator and the perpetrator of the crime,” IRCG Director Emir Ramic wrote in a letter to CEO Susan Wojcicki.

In July 1995, the Serbian army systematically murdered more than 8,000 Bosnians (Bosnian Muslims) in Srebrenica, which was ruled as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Court of Justice.

However, denial of the genocide in Srebrenica, contempt of historical facts and revisionism have become mainstream and common phenomena in Serbian and Bosnian Serb societies, which are also reflected on the Internet.

A YouTube spokesperson told RFE: “We have a clear and established hate speech policy that prohibits content to minimize or deny documented incidents of violence, including the genocide in Srebrenica.”

“If content is found to violate these guidelines, we will delete it.”

A Twitter spokesperson told RFE that their hate policy “prohibits all kinds of behavior.”

“This includes targeting individuals with offensive intent; calling for violent incidents, the type of violence in which protected people become victims; or trying to deny or minimize such incidents,” the spokesperson said.

“Furthermore, we have formulated a strong policy under beautification [violence] We are taking measures to combat such content and behaviors that try to glorify or praise violence and genocide. “

“Justice for the victims”

According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which has been tracking content online, most of the genocide denials came from Serbia, followed by the Serbian Republic of Serbia entity in Bosnia, Russia and France.

In response to Twitter and YouTube’s responses, Ramic told Al Jazeera that the news is that “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard is fighting against those who deny genocide, falsify historical, judicial, and scientific facts of genocide, and glorify convicted war criminals. Another victory for the city”.

“This [serves as] Justice for the victims of the worst atrocities since the European Holocaust was the only genocide recognized by justice after World War II. “

The latest news was released after Valentin Inzko, then head of the Office of the High Representative of Bosnia, It is forbidden to deny the Srebrenica genocide In July.

In Bosnia, he sentenced anyone who “openly condoned, denied, severely despised or tried to justify” genocide or war crimes committed in the country during the 1992-1995 international armed conflicts in prison for up to five years.

The new law will be introduced soon Rejected by Bosnian Serb politicians, Who threatened to boycott Bosnia’s central institutions.
