Pakistan Election Commission disqualifies ex-PM Imran Khan – Xinhua English.news.cn

[ad_1]

Khan’s Pakistan Justice Movement (PTI) party immediately rejected Friday’s ruling and called on supporters to take to the streets.

Faisal Fareed Chaudhry, a member of PTI’s legal team, told Al Jazeera that they are waiting for a detailed judgment before appealing to the Islamabad High Court. He also said they plan to question the scope of such a ruling by the committee. “We will challenge their jurisdiction and their authority to issue this decision,” he said.

A member of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) filed a lawsuit against Khan in August, alleging the former prime minister bought gifts from foreign dignitaries from the State Gift Depository, also known as Toshakhana, without disclosing the assets In a statement submitted to the committee, Al Jazeera reported.

Khan, who was removed from office in a parliamentary vote of no confidence in April, accused the committee of bias and pointed out that its head, Sikandar Sultan Raja, was biased against him and his party.

Khan has been holding rallies across the country since the government was ousted, demanding early polls. His narrative won him a lot of support as the PTI won big by-elections in July and October.
