UAE doctor explains how Ayurveda promotes daily health

Dubai: On the occasion of Ayurveda Day (October 23), doctors in the UAE say the ancient Indian medical system should be practiced as a way of life to fully benefit.

Dr. Mamta Suresh Radder, Medical Director and Principal Consultant at the Sri Tattva Panchakarma Ayurveda Centre in Dubai, said: “Ayurveda is one of the oldest and most well-documented medical systems in modern times. It is not just a medical system, it is our The embodiment of the natural symbiotic relationship.”

She added that the main purpose of Ayurveda is to maintain balance in life.

“It champions every aspect of our lives and brings us closer to achieving this goal. Our diet, occupation, activities, thought processes, and almost every aspect of our way of life can be shaped by the principles of Ayurveda. When Veda is viewed as traditional medicine, what we want to add is that it is a way of life. Ayurveda teaches us how to stay healthy. After all, health is nothing but a dynamic expression of life.”

Ayurveda in the UAE

Although Ayurveda is considered a medical science that originated in India, it is also heavily influenced by Arabic medicine. Dr Rad said herbs and spices brought by Arab traders from around the world had a place in Indian pharmacists’ pharmacies for centuries.

“The UAE has been supporting an effective medical system from all over the world…Since 2002, the country started to authorize TCAM [Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine] practitioners,” she noted.

Currently, there are more than 200 Ayurvedic doctors accredited by the Ministry of Health and Prevention and practicing in the UAE.

“Practitioners and clinics work under government regulators to ensure that Ayurvedic healthcare services meet the gold standard. This is actually done in a very strict and disciplined manner under routine inspections and advice from the authorities.”

In terms of service delivery, the Dubai government has even included Ayurveda in the basic insurance scheme, enabling people to access Ayurvedic medicines and treatments, she said.

Consciousness Driven

She emphasized that Ayurveda can be used to prevent disease and maintain good health. “We look forward to bringing Ayurveda into the daily life of the people of the UAE, thereby bringing health to the family and society.”

The Emirates Ayurveda Graduate Association (EAGA), a group of Ayurvedic doctors practicing in the UAE, is planning to reach out to the public through outreach programmes and events so that more people can take advantage of the benefits of the science. “Also a founding member and past president of EAGA.

Every year, the Indian government through the Ministry of AYUSH celebrates Ayurveda Day, which is the birthday of Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Hindu medicine. It happens to be the lunar month of Ashwin in the Hindu calendar Day 13, which is October 23 this year,” he said.

This year’s theme is “HarDin HarGhar Ayurveda” which means “Ayurveda for Every Home Everyday”. “The goal this year is to work with other governments to spread this comprehensive health message around the world.”

With a wealth of medicines to treat diseases, Ayurveda puts more emphasis on social and preventive medicine, he said.

Dr. Viswakumar says Ayurveda comprehensively advises and weaves the intricate structure of health, elaborating on Dinacharya (daily regimen), Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) and Swastavritta (disease prevention through a holistic approach).

“Health is all about habits and routines. The key to good health is to practice the mantra of being in harmony with yourself and the peaceful world around you. Healthy eating habits, regular and moderate exercise, and good sleep are the basic mantras of having a good metabolism, which is happiness,” he said.

Food and Ayurveda

Dr Shareefa Thesni, President of EAGA 2022-23, working with the Centre for Ayurvedic Alternative Medicine in Ajman, took the opportunity to offer some Ayurvedic tips on healthy eating.

“The foods we eat affect our body’s nutrition and overall health. Ayurveda recommends the Sattvic diet. It energizes and energizes, with an emphasis on eating whole foods, grains, lentils, vegetables, lean meats, healthy fats, journaling and spices,” she said added.

Replace tea and caffeinated beverages with herbal teas with tulsi (holy basil), cinnamon, black pepper and dried ginger, as well as raisins, lemon juice or jaggery (traditional dark brown unrefined sugar), says Dr. Thesni.

She also recommends “golden milk,” boiling half a teaspoon of turmeric powder with 150 ml of milk. She added that a compound in turmeric called “curcumin” has been found to fight inflammation in the body.

Also, she recommends garlic milk, boil 10g of crushed garlic pods with 40ml of milk and 40ml of water to half boil, then strain. “This milk will help reduce fat accumulation and relieve gas. Spices like fennel, cumin, coriander, etc. [ajwain] The seeds and fenugreek add rich flavor and are packed with nutritional value.
