No royals are reportedly set to move into Windsor Castle.
Buckingham Palace will also be vacant for the foreseeable future during a £369m refurbishment, a source told The Sun on Sunday. (23.10.22)
King Charles will choose Clarence House as his permanent residence, the publication said.
According to reports, he will not live at Buckingham Palace for up to five years, but will wait for the renovation of Buckingham Palace to be completed, which is due to be completed in 2027.
It was thought the Prince and Princess of Wales would move into Windsor Castle, but a source told The Sun there were “no plans for them to leave the Adelaide cottage”.
Prince William and his wife Catherine, who have children George, nine, Charlotte, seven and Louis, four, have only recently settled into their four-bed Adelaide cottage at Windsor estate.
A source told The Sun: “It was previously reported that William and Kate would be moving into Windsor Castle, but they have no plans to leave the Adelaide cottage.”
Balmoral Castle, one of the late Queen Elizabeth’s favourite residences, is also said to be deserted.
King and Queen Camilla are expected to split their time among several other castles, and their main residence is likely to remain Clarence House, 400 yards from Buckingham Palace, where they have lived for 19 years.
The couple moved into the five-bed home in 2003, a year after the queen mother died.
It is understood they will also spend some time in Sandringham, Norfolk.
Workers have carried out a 10-year renovation of Buckingham Palace, including the installation of new electrical equipment, plumbing and heating, which will make it uninhabitable until 2027.
Charles is said to be planning to host his family’s Christmas at Sandringham, with a source previously telling The Sun he sees it as “a retreat when needed” – especially after “a difficult Christmas this year” Queen Elizabeth died at her Balmoral home on September 8 at the age of 96, as members of the royal family continued to mourn the loss.
