Korean conglomerate CJ ENM appointed Gu Changjian as the new CEO of its entertainment division. Koo, a CJ Group veteran, is now overseeing plans for global expansion and accelerated growth to “lead a new paradigm in the entertainment industry,” the company said today.
Goo will succeed Ho-sung Kang, who will become CJ Group’s co-CEO, as part of an annual executive reshuffle. Koo first joined the company in 2010 and then worked as an analyst at Samsung Securities before taking over as CEO of global foodservice and culture company CJ Foodville in 2017. He then served as CEO of Korea’s No. 1 health company. And CJ Oliveyoung, the beauty shop he has been in charge of since 2018.
The entertainment division of CJ ENM is involved in media content, music, film and performing arts. It has been aggressively driving growth over the past few years. In 2021, it pledged to invest more than 5 trillion won ($4.5B) in content creation over the next five years.The company behind Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar winner parasite and Fox’s I can see your voice Earlier this year, Endeavor Content acquired 80% of the scripting business and expanded its multi-studio structure internationally to form CJ ENM Studios, focusing on content production for Korean and global OTT platforms.
Films supported this year include Classified Mission 2: Internationalwith the local box office recovering and Park Chan-wook being nominated for the Korean Oscars, the film grossed nearly $49 million, decision to leave.
CJ ENM is also continuing to expand its digital and technology businesses, most recently investing in US-based concert platform AmazeVR and partnering with Line Digital Frontier to form a Japanese joint venture, Studio Dragon Japan.
