UAE: Now see the evolution of art in the region in new Abu Dhabi exhibition

[ad_1]

This season’s flagship exhibition, Fahrelnissa and the Institutes: Towards a Sky, showcases abstract work by women artists who pioneered modern and contemporary art in Jordan, including internationally acclaimed artists Fahrelnissa Zeid, Wijdan, Hind Nasser and Ufemia Rezik. By investigating the dynamic role of these avant-garde women in the context of modern Jordan, this exhibition sheds light on a hitherto overlooked chapter of art history.

Through their valuable contributions, these artists were instrumental in creating a legacy of progressive and bold artistic practice, and helped to create the intellectual and educational framework that shaped the Jordanian art scene as we know it today. Each artist in the exhibition has a dedicated section to display individually, and the archives showcase the rich institutional history of these women artists. Fahrelnissa and the Institutes is curated by Cultural Foundation Director Reem Fadda with Assistant Curators Noor Almehairbi and Zuhoor Alsayegh.

‘Life is a Circus’ is a group exhibition in which the Cultural Foundation revisits its first digital art exhibition in 1996, featuring the work of Emirati artist Jalal Luqman. In Life is a Circus, Luqman returns to the Cultural Foundation with 22 Emirati digital artists, all of whom have been commissioned to produce work exclusively for the show.

The exhibition looks at the evolution of digital art over the years by exploring satirical themes of contemporary life. This is also the foundation’s first NFT (non-fungible token) art exhibition, where visitors can buy artwork online. Artists on Life is a Circus include Rafeea Alkhyeli, Hamdan Al Shamsi, Zainab Mohamed, Rafiaa Hussain, Rashid Al Mulla, Sarwa Abdul, Aisha Al Hashmi, Saggaf Al Hashmi, Liza Ramos, Reem Al Mazroei and many more. It is curated by Sumayyah Al Suwaidi and Assistant Curator Aysha Al Aseeri.

The third and final presentation of the season is the children’s exhibition “Lullaby: Journey of Songs” curated by Reem Al Hashmi. Featuring a collection of sleep songs from around the world, including the Middle East, Africa and Asia, Lullabies: A Journey Through Song takes parents and caregivers on a nostalgic journey that begins with a childhood lullaby. The exhibition highlights the history, context and purpose of each song through different media such as video animations, interactive games and exploration areas.

Fadda said: “Our new season of art exhibitions at the Cultural Foundation will present a fresh perspective to our audience. The flagship exhibition Fahrelnissa and the Institutes: Towards a Sky brings Abu Dhabi an avant-garde contemporary living and working in Jordan. Incredible work by female artists, including artist Fahrelnissa Zeid, an influential mentor. Meanwhile, Life is a Circus focuses not only on digital work as an art form, but also for emerging artists from the UAE Artists provide revelation. This is at the heart of what we do at the Cultural Foundation – introducing audiences to critically acclaimed work from the region and beyond, and supporting local artists who are blazing a trail in the art world.”

The Cultural Foundation will also host public lectures, film screenings and events related to the three exhibitions.
