Formula 2 rookie Jack Doohan will be on FP1 duty for Alpine at this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix and Abu Dhabi.
Doohan, a member of the Alpine Academy, has had an impressive performance in F2 this year and is currently fourth with three wins, nine points behind third-placed Logan Sargeant in the race for rookie honours. The Australian – who is the son of legendary motorcycle racer Mick – has finished filming the 2022 car, but will make his debut during the Formula 1 weekend on Friday.
“I’m very grateful to Alpine for giving me the opportunity to do free practice in Mexico,” Doohan said. “It’s always a huge privilege to be entrusted with driving a Formula 1 car, so having the opportunity to race a Grand Prix weekend is very special. Ultimately, we aim to do this every week, and this experience is one step closer to achieving that goal. One step closer.
“I’ve prepared as much as I can and I think it’s going to be very exciting to experience the car on a track with this high altitude and a very high top speed. I’ll work hard that day and do whatever the team has set, Also enjoying the moment I know this is going to be a unique opportunity.”
Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer said Doohan’s progress in 2022 had been noticed and deserved to be rewarded with track time as part of two mandatory FP1 courses the team had to run.
“We are delighted to announce that Jack will join the Mexican team and take over the driving duties of Free Practice 1,” said Szafnauer. “We’ve all been impressed with Jack’s improvement in many areas this season and he deserves this opportunity as we continue to develop his high potential.
“It is important to give our young drivers the opportunity to test Formula 1 cars and our Academy programme has proven successful in this regard. We want Jack to work hard during training and get as much as possible from his involvement in the Formula 1 Grand Prix Lessons learned from the race weekend experience.”
