Abu Dhabi signs agreement on Milan city food policy

Abu Dhabi signed the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact (MUFPP), demonstrating its commitment to reducing food waste and developing more sustainable food systems.

The agreement was signed at the recent World Wholesale Markets Alliance Conference 2022 in Abu Dhabi on the theme “Global Food Security in the Twenty-First Century: Ensuring Resilient and Sustainable Fresh Food Supply Chains Challenges and Solutions”.

The Milan Convention involves more than 250 cities representing 450 million people. It includes advice and actions to support sound planning laws and systems, governance, production and distribution of sustainable food systems and supply networks, social and economic equity, and how to avoid wasting food resources.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, Dr. Salem Al Kaabi, Director of Operations, Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), said: “Food safety is critical to the sustainability and continuity of quality of life. The DMT aims to provide Provides subsidized food distribution centres to support food security goals to ensure easy access to food for citizens of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The sector is also improving through the development of sustainable transport solutions, managing permits and facilitating procedures that support investments in the agricultural sector food security and sustainability.”

Saeed Al Bahri Al Ameri, Director General of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Authority, said: “All signatory cities to the agreement will have valuable opportunities to exchange experiences, collaborate and benefit from the experiences of other countries. By doing so, food security agencies can Build capacity and develop integrated strategies to overcome future and current challenges.

“Using an integrated food security and agricultural data platform, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Authority collects the data needed for food security-related decision-making and provides alerts to ensure food security emergencies and risks are dealt with swiftly. Our team also strives to provide Accurate information on Abu Dhabi’s food and agriculture sector. The comprehensive dashboard allows us to monitor the food security situation locally, regionally and globally.”

Khalifa Economic Zone, Abu Dhabi – Mohamed Al Khadar Al Ahmed, CEO of KEZAD Group, said: “This agreement is in line with the wider framework of the UAE’s long-term strategy for food security and sustainability and reflects our wise leadership supporting local, Regional and international efforts to build resilient supply chains for our communities and future generations. The Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) group is developing infrastructure to support Abu Dhabi in achieving MUFPP goals, including Advanced storage facilities that contribute to food safety and reduce food waste and spoilage levels. In addition, we are developing production facilities to support local food production with the highest international health and safety standards.”

Milan’s Deputy Mayor for Food Policy, Anna Scavuzzo, said: “We welcome Abu Dhabi to our network of more than 250 cities around the world working towards more sustainable food systems.
