World News | Syria reports Israeli airstrikes in Damascus area

[ad_1]

DAMASCUS, Oct. 27 (AP) — Israel carried out airstrikes early Thursday on sites near Damascus, the third such airstrike in a week, Syrian state media reported.

The Syrian military said Israeli missiles were fired at outposts near Damascus at around 12:30 a.m. and that its air defenses “had countered the missile aggression and shot down most of the missiles”. No casualties were reported.

The attack follows similar attacks on Friday and Monday. A soldier was wounded in a rare daytime airstrike on Monday, according to the Syrian army.

Friday’s strike was the first of its kind since Sept. 17, when attacks on Damascus International Airport and military posts near the Syrian capital killed five soldiers.

The Israeli army has not issued a statement on the airstrike.

Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks on targets in Syrian government-controlled areas in recent years, but these actions are rarely acknowledged or discussed.

Israel, however, has admitted it targets the bases of Iran-aligned militant groups, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces.

The Israeli strike comes amid a wider shadow war between Israel and Iran.

The attacks on the airports in Damascus and Aleppo stemmed from fears that they could be used to transport Iranian weapons into the country. (Associated Press)
