Covid Delta variant: Philippines extends travel ban on 10 countries-News

[ad_1]

The travel ban was first implemented on April 27, 2021.

A spokesperson for the President of the Philippines said on Friday that the Philippines will extend the ban on travelers from India and nine other countries to the end of August due to concerns over the highly contagious coronavirus delta mutation.

The Philippine authorities are working hard to control the surge in coronavirus cases to the highest point in four months. The number of infected people on Thursday remained above 12,000 for the second day in a row. Hospitals in some areas are close to full capacity.

The travel ban was first implemented on April 27 and has been postponed several times and expanded to include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque (Harry Roque) said in a statement that President Rodrigo Duterte approved the coronavirus working group’s recommendations to extend travel restrictions from August 16 to August 31.

The Manila Capital Region is composed of 16 cities with a population of 13 million. It is still under strict lockdown to curb the spread of the delta. At the same time, the government has increased vaccination efforts.

About 11% of the country’s 110 million people are fully immunized, but millions of people are still very vulnerable to Covid-19, which has caused more than 29,500 deaths in this Southeast Asian country.

With the surge in cases, more and more hospitals in the capital region reported that intensive care units, isolation beds, and wards were nearly full, and some hospitals had to reject new patients due to insufficient beds and ventilators.
