Charlotte – the city of Charlotte Arts and Culture Advisory Council On October 25, $251,000 in grants were awarded to 13 arts and cultural projects.
The award is the latest grant Opportunity Fund, which supports local arts and cultural projects, programs and initiatives that may not be part of existing grant cycles or structures in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.Projects must also meet larger goals and guidelines Infusion Fundwhich is the city’s partner, Carolina Foundation and private donors to support arts and culture through June 2024.
After disbursing nearly $400,000 from the Opportunity Fund this fiscal year, the Advisory Committee also voted to suspend acceptance of any new grant applications while evaluating the Fund’s progress to date and fine-tuning the grant application process. Requests from applicants who have submitted expressions of interest and are invited to submit full proposals may be considered for funding from remaining funds in November. These complete proposals must be received by November 3 to be considered for an award.
“Since launching in early September, the board has received funding applications totaling well over $400,000, demonstrating the need for innovative tools like the Opportunity Fund to fill the local funding gap,” said Priya Sircar, the city’s arts and culture official. “We will now consider the best next steps for the fund and we look forward to opening up new opportunities in 2023.”
Latest recipients of Opportunity Fund grants
A 10-minute theatre festival presented by the African American Playwrights Group and the Performing Arts and Letters Association.
2023-2024 dance and circus performances by Caroline Calouche & Co. and Charlotte Cirque and Dance Center.
Performances include “Clara’s Journey: A Story of the Circus and the Dancing Nutcracker,” the cabaret-style “Rouge,” and “Stargazer: A Trek into Outer Space.”
Grant Amount: $25,000.
QC Family Tree’s cultural bearing artist residency program.

Street culture art led by Jose Valentin Ramirez Cardiel.
Charlotte Off-Broadway production of “The Flirt Bar.”
“The Flirt Bar” concert read by Susan Lambert Hatem, Michelle Malone and Amy Ray, a new musical about women turning a former club into a Flirt Bar, a place women can go to flirt.
Grant Amount: $10,000.
Mobile Poet’s adaptation of The Little Prince.
Print Shop Concert Series by Shoot2Edit Studios.
The live recording concert series showcases indie singers, musicians and instrumentalists from all genres in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg music community. During the show, screen printers create custom t-shirt designs to serve as the artist’s future merchandise.
Grant Amount: $40,000.
Violence/Enough is enough (tentative title) for the Carlos Alexis Cruz and Nouveau Sud Circus project.
