On an ABC special airing Friday at 8 p.m. ET, Matthew Perry sit down Diane Sawyer Discussing his sobriety, fame and his life today, as he writes in his new memoir, Friends, lovers and scary events.
Perry’s book details his hard, almost fatal struggle with addiction. At one point, he took 55 Vicodin tablets a day. “An addiction is the obsession in your heart: ‘Give me now everything you’ve given me before,'” Perry said. “I have to wake up and realize I need to get 55 of them or I’m going to be very sick.”
To meet demand, Perry said, he would fake ailments like migraines and even endure MRIs to help doctors sell prescriptions for him. “I think the weirdest thing I did was on a Sunday, I would go to the open house and go to the bathroom … see what pills they had in there and steal them,” Perry recalled. “And I think they thought, ‘Well, there’s no way Chandler could come in and steal our stuff.'”
Actors are now in a better position thanks to a strong support system. “One person you lose to this disease,” he said. “Now I finally feel better and feel like I have some strength.”
The book also highlights the good times in his life. Perry says he has a ‘chain crush’ friends actor Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow“Well, why don’t you like Jenny, Courteney, and Lisa?” He smiled.
He told Sawyer, “It’s a bit difficult to go to work because I have to pretend I don’t exist.” He said of Aniston, “I kept thinking, ‘How long can I see her? Is three seconds too long?'”
