Amazon moved filming to the UK, New Zealand lost “Lord of the Rings” | Business and Economic News

On Friday, Amazon Studios announced that the second season of “The Lord of the Rings” will be filmed in the UK instead of New Zealand. The first season of filming recently ended in New Zealand.

Fans of Middle-earth may not be annoyed at where Amazon Studios filmed its unnamed Lord of the Rings TV series. For those who are paid by putting JRR Tolkien’s book on the big screen, the situation is different.

On Friday, Amazon Studios announced that it would shoot the second season of its “Lord of the Rings” series in the UK instead of New Zealand. The shooting of the first season has just recently ended.

Amazon Studio said in a statement: “The move from New Zealand to the UK is consistent with the studio’s strategy to expand its production footprint and invest in UK studio space. Many of Amazon Studio’s pillar series and films already call the UK home. “statement.

This news marks the first time that works based on epic fantasy novels will not be filmed in New Zealand. Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson filmed his trilogy of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies in New Zealand.

This is a blow to the New Zealand film industry. According to government data, Amazon spent at least $465 million in the first season—making it one of the most expensive works in history. The project directly employs 1,200 employees in New Zealand and indirectly employs 700 employees.

Economic Development Minister Stuart Nash said in a statement reported by Reuters: “Amazon Studios suggested that post-production for the first season will continue in New Zealand until June 2022.”

Nash said that the extra 5% bonus provided by the New Zealand screen production grant and the 20% grant for eligible productions will be withdrawn.

“When we wish to transfer production to the UK, we do not intend to actively seek 5% financial growth in the first quarter memorandum of understanding reached with the New Zealand government or retain the terms of the agreement, but we respect our partners and will continue to work with them Negotiate closely on the next step,” Albert Cheng, chief operating officer and co-director of TV at Amazon Studios, said in a company press release.

Amazon said its series will take place in the Middle-earth of the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Amazon said: “The series tells about a group of familiar and new characters as they face the long fear of evil reappearing in Middle-earth.”

The series will premiere on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and regions around the world on September 2, 2022.
