“The absolute love for my job and Binhai Hospital has led me to take on more responsibility,” she said.

Aoun said being a midwife was one of the most satisfying things for her. “It has been challenging at times, just like any other profession. But it helps a lot in the UAE. The UAE has such an advanced system for medical professionals – both in terms of regulations and ethics. Everything is laid out so clearly , which makes it easy to work here.”

She recalled that when I first started working as a midwife, she worked more than 12 times a day, 15 shifts a month.

“Midwives are health care providers trained to provide obstetrics and gynaecology services, including primary care, antenatal and obstetric care, and routine gynecological care. Midwives are responsible for pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, and postpartum health. Some midwives also provide reproductive Nursing, such as pelvic exams, Pap smears, etc.,” explains Aoun, who completed her midwifery diploma in 1987. She also obtained a Diploma in Nursing in 1986.

“Being a midwife and supporting women during childbirth takes a special skill. It takes a special kind of love to give and share. Caring and supporting women during childbirth is a very fulfilling job. Thinking I can It feels great to help bring new life to the world,” she said.

Aoun has helped deliver more than 4,000 babies at Marina Hospital so far.

Aoun recalls the moment one of her elderly patients recognized her from her voice. “This lady gave birth to her first child 15 years ago. I am a midwife. I have been talking to her and giving her all my support. She returned to the hospital to deliver her third child. When she saw her again When I was there, she recognized my voice. She said she couldn’t remember my face, but my voice, she couldn’t forget because I was talking to her during her pregnancy. It touched my heart.”

Aoun said she was grateful for the support of her husband Rabih, who works as an IT consultant in Abu Dhabi. All three of her children were born in Abu Dhabi – unsurprisingly at Marina Hospital – also supporting their mother’s busy work schedule. “My son Michael is a mechanical engineer, my daughter Tiffany works in a private company in finance, and my other son Martin is a freshman in college. “Their success is my success,” Aoun said.

As one of the COVID heroes, Aoun said she was assigned to set up the first isolation ward at Binhai Hospital. She also manages an isolation ward in a hotel in Abu Dhabi. “I received a certificate award from the SEHA Group Head Nurse for my role during the pandemic. It is a treasure and will always be close to my heart.”

Aoun said one of the biggest highlights of her long career at Marina Hospital was her learning to understand different cultures. “I’ve been very fortunate to meet so many people from different backgrounds, whether it’s colleagues from around the world or my patients. I don’t think I’d get this kind of exposure anywhere else.”
