World leaders expressed their condolences over the horrors in Seoul.

So far, 151 people have been killed and 82 injured in the Halloween stampede in Seoul on Saturday night, Yonhap News Agency reported. The dead included 19 foreigners from Iran, Uzbekistan, China and Norway.

An estimated 100,000 people have gathered in Itaewon for the largest outdoor Halloween celebration in the country since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The South Korean government has recently eased Covid restrictions, giving people the chance to venture out.

Most people attending Halloween events are in their teens or twenties. As the crowd poured into a narrow alley, a stampede occurred, trapping and crushing a large group of people.

Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the accident in Itaewon and saw CPR being performed on people lying on the street.

The Associated Press reported that according to witnesses, the streets were crowded with people and slow-moving vehicles, making it nearly impossible for first responders and ambulances to reach the alleys to treat the wounded.

South Korean President Yoon Se-yeol declared national mourning on Sunday and ordered flags at government buildings and public offices to be flown at half-staff.

Addressing the country’s citizens, Yeol said his government’s priority was to provide support to victims’ families, including their funeral preparations and the treatment of the injured.

The president also called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident and review the safety of other large cultural and recreational events.
