Khaled Al Shehhi wins third gold for UAE in Jiu-Jitsu world

The UAE added a gold, silver and two bronze medals to their medal total to 10 on Day 2 of the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

In the first two days of the tournament at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena, the U16 boys and girls also reached a combined total of 29 medals after 19 medals.

Khaled Al Shehhi beat Omar Al Fadhli at 62kg in the all-UAE final to claim the host nation’s third gold medal in the men’s division. Hessa Al Shamsi (Women’s 48kg) and Saeed Al Kubaisi (85kg) joined them on the podium, taking bronze.

Al Fadhli emulated what Faisal Al Ketbi, the national team captain and most honoured UAE jiu-jitsu player, had done the night before, giving his teammates the victory after reaching the final.

“My teammate Khalid made it to the final through four races, it was an amazing effort and he deserved the gold medal,” said Al Fadeli, the category’s defending champion.

“Our goal was to reach the final and we achieved it, it doesn’t matter who wins the gold medal, as long as it is for the UAE. We will celebrate this achievement tonight and be ready for the next event.”

Both Al Fadhli and Al Shehhi will compete in the World Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Abu Dhabi starting next week.

“It was an amazing game. I’m happy to win all five games today,” Al Shehhi added.

“I am very proud to represent the UAE at the World Championships and win a medal. I met my friend Omar in the final. I would like to congratulate him on his superb performance today.”

Canada topped the medal standings by winning two golds, two silvers and a bronze on Day 2.

Rain Pfaff beat Colombia’s Laura Castillo in the 70kg+ final to take the gold, while Felicia Marceau defeated Greece’s Christina Tsantila in the 57kg, both in the women’s category with four golds, two silvers and three Bronze overall grade.

The UAE (3-3-4) dropped to second, followed by Germany (3-1-1).
