As the recovery in air travel continues to gain momentum, the UAE’s budget airlines Flydubai and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi have expanded their networks to destinations outside most of the GCC region.
The Dubai-based budget airline said on Friday that starting next year, it will launch flights to Cagliari, Sardinia; Corfu, Greece; Milan, Italy; Krabi and Pattaya, Thailand. Flydubai will also resume flights to Hofuf, Saudi Arabia from November 24 this year.
Since the beginning of this year, flydubai has launched flights to more than 20 destinations including Pisa and Catania in Italy, Osh in Kyrgyzstan, Samarkand and Namangan in Uzbekistan.
With the new routes, the airline has expanded its network to 113 destinations in 53 countries, the largest destination the airline has served since its operation.
As for Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the latest route will serve travelers to Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the largest city in Central Asia.
The new flights will start operating in January 2023 and operate every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The air travel market continues to recover after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. In August 2022, global passenger traffic, as measured by revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), increased by 67.7% year-on-year.
Passenger traffic is now 73.7% of pre-crisis levels, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
