UAE: Sharjah International Book Fair 2022 opens new chapter for children’s writers

Sharjah: Among the 1.5 million books at the ongoing Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) are stories written by Emirati young children who have published their first titles.

What started as a school project has turned into the debut novel of a 13-year-old Emirati student who recently launched his short story collection at the 41st SIBF at the Sharjah Expo Centre. The free-to-attend exhibition runs under the slogan “Spread the Word” until November 13th.

Abdulla Almarzooqi, a student at Raha International School in Abu Dhabi, told Gulf News that his book “The Teeny Tiny Adventures” was originally part of his English class. “For 30 days, we were told to write short stories. I wrote more than 10 stories in just three days. Then I showed my stories to my parents,” he said.

“My mom said — initially as a joke — that she would publish my book. But she was so impressed with my work that she decided to look for a publishing house and distributor,” Abdullah added.

Medad Publishing and Distribution published Almarzooqi’s short story, which turned into a 100-page wallet. The cover of the book was drawn by Abdullah himself, who also drew cartoons for each page of the book.

‘Related roles’

Abdullah was ecstatic when his book was published. He said: “My short stories are for children to read and enjoy. The book is designed to teach them things they can do in life and learn from them. Each story is short and great for day or night reading … they can also be associated with characters.”

In his book, the young author recounts everyday events through the eyes of young children, including Ant Andrew, Dumpster Timmy, Jam Jason, Drone Daniel, Plant Peter, Pipe Patrick, Blue Whale Watson, Fred and the ranch, Gary the ash cloud, Carl the kayak, Tom and the trampoline, Derek the dragon and Terry the tiger.

As for his inspiration and favorite author, Abdullah chose David Williams, a British comedian, actor and writer who has influenced his outlook on life. He says Williams is always fun to read — something he hopes to achieve with his book.

Abdullah said he was planning a sequel to his debut. His mother Noora also wanted Abdulla to continue writing. Noora’s advice to her son is to keep reading and learn more. “If he reads a lot, then he can write more,” she said.

“My Beautiful World”

Meanwhile, Aadya Gupta, a 7-year-old Indian student in Dubai, wrote a book called My Beautiful World. The young writer lives in Dubai with her parents, brother and her pet dog Athena. Aadya loves music, art and playing with Athena.

Her book is a collection of short stories about her life in Dubai. Third-year students at GEMS Founders School even recently received the Principal’s “Outstanding Student” award for publishing their own book.

Her father, radiologist Dr Priyank Gupta, told Gulf News that the inspiration behind his daughter’s book was the COVID-19 pandemic. “After a crazy, pandemic-ravaged year, Aadya finds she has a lot to say. This is how this book is a collection of stories straight from the innocent and beautiful minds of children. There’s laughter, love and Infinitely fun story.”

Her mother, ophthalmologist Dr Angini Gupta, said: “Writing a book is sometimes the easiest part – but getting it to the masses is even harder. Finding the right publisher is a challenge, especially when Because this was Little Aadya’s first writing adventure. But her school came to the rescue, connecting her with a fantastic team of editors and publishers. We are so grateful for her book to be featured at the Sharjah International Book Fair. We have received great reviews from friends and show visitors.”

The family is from New Delhi and has always supported Adiya’s interest in writing. “For a seven-year-old, she writes very well. Writing is her favorite form of expression. Her older brother, Atharva, likes sports, not writing. But Aadhya showed a great interest in writing from an early age. As Parents, we want to encourage this, which is why we decided to publish this book,” Dr Priyank said.

“We would encourage her to use her imagination. She has written down ideas for a new book based on her experiences and dreams. She has her own pink journal when she writes down her thoughts.”
