Abu Dhabi’s Department of Health (DoH) has warned against the use of the “Quick Weight Loss Capsules” food supplement due to its potential to cause cancer.
This product is an oral capsule and is said to cause weight loss.
The Department of Health explained that laboratory analysis of the product proved that the product contained the undeclared banned substance “phenolphthalein,” which is classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is generally not considered safe and effective.
“Furthermore, studies have shown that phenolphthalein shows a potential carcinogenic risk,” the ministry added.
It also said that phenolphthalein has been found to be toxic to genes because it can cause DNA damage or mutation. It also contains microbial growth that exceeds allowable limits.
“The product is not registered with the Ministry of Health and Community Protection, but has been shown to be spread by the seller through social platforms (Instagram) and can be purchased online through social media,” the ministry said.
The department warns the public against the use of the above products and calls on health professionals to report any complaints about the quality of the products with medical claims or any side effects resulting from the use of the above products by email: PVE@doh.gov.ae
