Thousands march in Peru demanding resignation of leftist president Pedro Castillo

Thousands took to the streets of Peru on Saturday to demand the resignation of embattled President Pedro Castillo, a leftist whose government is under investigation for corruption.

Protesters carry the Andean country’s vertical striped red-white-red flag and placards with anti-government slogans as they march towards the opposition-led march Congress in the capital Lima.

Castillo called opponents of his government “reactionaries” and “enemies of the people.” Police in helmets and plastic shields fired several canisters of tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Castillo, who took office last July, has survived two impeachments. Opposition lawmakers are seeking a new trial of the president, even as Congress admits it won’t get enough votes.

“We saw a government involved in corruption and Congress didn’t respond,” said Lucas Gelsey, a conservative lawyer and one of the organizers of the march called the Peruvian Response.

In October, Peru’s attorney general submitted a constitutional complaint against Castillo to Congress, saying the right-wing opposition wanted it to end in his removal from office.

Similar protests were held in other cities across the country, including Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cusco and Trujillo, according to reports and images broadcast by local TV channel Canal N.
