The clock, established in 1945 by the nonprofit Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, is “a metaphor for the dangers that must be addressed if we are to survive on Earth,” according to the group.
François Diaz-Morin, the bulletin’s deputy editor for nuclear affairs, told Newsweek, “It is clear that with the war in Ukraine we were – and still are – worried that the world might sleepwalk into nuclear war. .”

The clock was first set in 1947 and has since been reset 24 times. The clock is set to seven minutes before midnight in 1947, two years before the start of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union.
