CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Foundation recently announced that local philanthropists Susan and Bob Salvin have donated $3 million to the Carolina Theater, a historic theater built around 1927 that is being converted for the public theater.
In honor of their contributions, the Carolina Theater’s performance area will be named the Susan and Bob Salvin Stage.
The Carolina Theater, abandoned since 1978, will reopen in 2023. Once open, the Carolina Theater will serve as a civic center and feature programming such as speakers, community engagement events, town hall meetings, arts and entertainment, films, and more. The Carolina Foundation is overseeing fundraising and funding for the 36,000-square-foot theater Refurbishment work.
As a teenager, Bob Salvin fondly remembers taking the bus to the uptown movie in the heyday of the Carolina Theatre. Now he and his wife are happy to help restore it to its former glory.
“Charlotte is our home, and we feel we have a responsibility to give back,” said Bob Salvin. “We are excited to make this gift to restore this important part of Charlotte’s history and create a place for civic engagement and the arts.”
Susan is a retired pediatric nurse and past director of Presbyterian Heimby Children’s Hospital. Bob is an entrepreneur who started a company from the trunk of a car and grew it into a global surgical instrument and biotechnology business.
Both are active in the community – Susan is a founding board member of Teen Health Connection and Bob has served as president of the Metrolina Business Council and the Charlotte World Trade Association. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Queen Charlotte University.
“I can’t think of two philanthropists more deserving of recognition than Susan and Bob. We are honored to have the Salvin name grace our stage,” said Michael Marsicano, President and CEO of FFTC, who oversees Fundraiser for the theater renovation. “Every speaker, musician, panelist, artist and entertainer who appears on our stage now – and their audience – will know Salvin’s name. It will be a reminder of the need to help bring the Charlotte Treasure back to life. charitable generosity.”
The Carolina Theater was donated by the City of Charlotte to the foundation to restore the classic theater and create a civic center and entertainment venue. The theater will be part of a larger civic campus called Belk Place in honor of Katherine Belk and the families of the late Thomas M. Belk and the late Claudia and John M. Belk.
