As Twitter begins rolling out its “paid” blue tick, French minister and government spokesman Olivier Veran said on Sunday (Nov. 6) that he would not pay the $7.99-a-month account verification fee . He added that he was concerned about the ambitions of the new owner of the social media platform, Elon Musk.
On Saturday, Twitter began updating its apps in Apple’s App Store and began charging for blue check marks. This is the first major revision since Musk took office on October 28.
Those who “sign up now” can receive a checkmark next to their username “just like celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow,” Twitter said.
“If they think this is a fee that they have to start paying, I invite them to immediately de-authenticate my account,” Veran told France 3 television.
Before Musk took over, a blue checkmark next to a username meant Twitter had confirmed that the account belonged to the person or company that claimed it.

Veran even said he wasn’t sure if he would continue to use Twitter after Musk’s acquisition. He agreed it was a major communication tool, but added: “This major global tool belongs to one person, and the ambition he’s shown has me a little bit concerned – at least some of it – which means I’m going to be vigilant, and If necessary, I will take my own responsibility.”
Veran has a verified Twitter account with a blue checkmark. The former health minister has nearly 425,000 followers.
