Wind turbines off Egypt's Red Sea coast, have reached agreement with the UAE on a major new wind energy project

Wind turbines off Egypt’s Red Sea coast have reached an agreement with the United Arab Emirates for a major new wind energy project.

The United Arab Emirates and Egypt agreed on Tuesday to strike a deal on the sidelines of the UN COP27 climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh to develop one of the world’s largest wind farms.

The 10 gigawatt (GW) onshore wind project in Egypt, once completed, will generate 47,790 GWh of clean energy annually, the UAE’s state news agency WAM said in a statement, without specifying a timeline.

According to WAM, it will offset 23.8 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to about 9% of Egypt’s current CO2 emissions.

The wind farm will also save Egypt about $5 billion in annual gas costs and help create up to 100,000 jobs.

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, along with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, signed the agreement between the UAE Masdar Renewable Energy Company and Egypt’s Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities.

Sheikh Mohammed said in a statement on Twitter that the deal “is in line with our commitment to move forward” Renewable Energy Solutions that support sustainable development“.

United Nations COP27 climate summit It kicked off Sunday in Egypt, warning against backsliding on emissions reduction efforts and calling for rich countries to compensate poor countries after a year of extreme weather disasters.
