A father has been ordered to pay his daughter Dh3.3 million for selling a property he bought for her with money she gave him 16 years ago, but later sold without her knowledge.

Official court documents say the daughter filed a lawsuit against her father, demanding Dh3.7 million – the value of the property he sold without her consent. She also seeks an additional Dh500,000 for mental and material damages.

The woman explained in the lawsuit that she gave her father Dh800,000 16 years ago after they agreed to buy a residential land for her and transfer the title deed to her. She said her husband gave her money.

The man also agreed to invest in the site and let his daughter receive rent.

The father bought the land with the money he got from his daughter, but did not transfer the title to his daughter. She confirmed that her father used the land for himself and had invested in it for 16 years.

She said she had asked him to transfer the land title to her name and give the property to her, but he refused.

Because of their relationship, the woman said she was patient and did not take any legal action at first.

However, in 2021, she was surprised to learn that her father had sold the land for Dh3.7 million without her knowledge and consent, and that he kept all the cash from the sale.

The daughter said in the lawsuit that her father caused her financial loss because she missed opportunities to enjoy her money and invest it in other opportunities that could make her a profit.

The father denied taking the money from his daughter, but his daughter’s ex-husband testified in court that he gave the complainant a cheque for Dh800,000 in 2006 that he wrote in her name. The man said it was a gift from their first birth.

He said his ex-wife wanted to buy a piece of land, and she agreed that her father would buy it for her. The man said he was present when she handed the cheque to her father, who used it to buy the land.

After hearing from all parties, the Abu Dhabi Court of Family and Civil Administrative Claims issued a ruling ordering the father to pay Dh3.3 million to the daughter.

He was also told to pay Dh50,000 in damages and pay his daughter’s legal costs.
