British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expresses regret The resignation of a disgraced ally appointed on Wednesday drew heavy criticism of the new leader’s political judgment. Gavin Williamson resigned from Sunak’s new government on Tuesday night After accusing him of sending threatening messages to lawmakers and former colleagues.

Sunak names Williamson as multi-purpose restorer and policy enforcer When he became prime minister last month, although his allies have been forced to resign from cabinet twice in the past.

“I obviously regret appointing someone who has had to resign under these circumstances,” Sunak told opposition Labour leader Kirstarmer in parliament.

“There is no question that the conduct complained of is unacceptable,” he added, while stressing that he was unaware of “specific concerns” arising from Williamson’s past government positions.

Starmer used his resignation to paint Sunak as weak after he also appointed Sulla Braverman as interior secretary to appease the Conservative right, even as her own abilities were questioned.

The Labour leader pointed out that Williamson kept a tarantula in his office when he was the government’s chief whip for party discipline.

If Sunak can’t fight “a cartoon bully with a pet spider…what chance does he have to rule the country?” Starmer said.

Following the swift departures of his predecessors Boris Johnson and Liz Truss this year, the prime minister insists his government will be characterized by “integrity, professionalism and accountability”.

Williamson, 46, has been fired twice in the past by Johnson and former Prime Minister Theresa May for leaking classified information while he was defence secretary.
