Poetry is ancient. really old. It came into use before written language, initially as a means of remembering history through oral storytelling. This is why we often feel the rhythm or beat of a poem, and why rhyme is often a part of poetry – rhyme is easy to remember, and rhythm moves words. Think of the “Iliad” and “Odyssey” – the legends originally spoken of – and the Nordic Eddas; the many Far, Near and Middle Eastern works; the natives; the natives of North and South America – wherever people gather, there are Stories, usually in songs, are told in rhythm and rhythm, perhaps similar to rap today.
Poetry is often found in and around academia these days, probably as a result of the many creative writing MFA programs that exist today. I’ve been through one of these myself, but I’ve always believed that the average person on the street is the best poet in the country. I believe that poetry based on everyday life is the most important, meaningful, and enduring.
