Washington: In the summer of 2022, the Supreme Court struck down the abortion protections contained in the Roe v Wade decision in a historic decision and delegated the power to make abortion-related laws to the states.
Abortion will no longer have state protection.
Five months later, some U.S. states have spoken out and are doing what they can to protect abortion rights.
The issue is also widely seen as inspiring the Democratic base, shaping the preferences of women and young voters and ensuring a higher-than-expected midterm turnout.
Abortion is a top priority for 27% of midterm voters, according to a CNN exit poll.
In Kentucky, voters rejected a state constitutional amendment that would allow the state not to ensure, protect or fund abortion — effectively passing a law that greatly restricts or prohibits abortion rights.
In Michigan, where abortion is a key political issue across races, voters have decisively supported proposals to codify abortion protections into law.
The amendment established “the right of the individual to reproductive freedom, including the right to make and carry out all decisions concerning pregnancy”.
In California, voters backed an amendment to ensure reproductive freedom and said the state has no right to interfere with abortion.
In Vermont, voters support an amendment to the state constitution that says “the individual’s personal reproductive autonomy” is at the heart of “the freedom and dignity to determine the course of one’s life,” unless there is a compelling reason to, Otherwise, the realization of the national interest in the least restrictive way shall not be denied or violated.”
Kansas rejected an anti-abortion measure in August, the first sign that the issue has sparked enthusiasm among voters even in parts of the country traditionally considered Republican.
At the time of writing, the outcome of Montana’s abortion-related issues is still to be announced.
