Crawford also confirmed that the revamped Twitter Blue subscription product will allow paying users to have a blue checkmark on their account, but won’t actually verify the user’s identity. The lack of authentication could raise concerns about the possibility of impersonating a public figure.

Twitter’s head of security and integrity, Yoel Roth, tweeted that such concerns have led Twitter to delay the launch of the new version of Twitter Blue until after the U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday.

Fake accounts by government officials are a recurring problem for Twitter around the world, according to sources and researchers familiar with the matter.

Crawford has said that not all Twitter accounts that have previously been verified with a blue check mark will receive the “official” label, and that the label cannot be purchased.

However, she tweeted that accounts of governments, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and a number of other public figures will receive the label.

Former Twitter board member and early product lead Jason Goldman said that introducing a new label next to an existing checkmark “created a confusing system” where some (but not all) previously verified accounts would be considered official account. year.

“It was a complete mess,” he said.

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that the idea for the official hashtag was driven by an internal push by Twitter policy executives, who were strongly concerned that government officials around the world were unlikely and unwilling to pay for verified checkmarks.

Twitter, which lost many members of its communications team, did not respond to Reuters’ request for further comment.

Crawford added Tuesday that Twitter will “continue to experiment with ways to differentiate between account types.”
