Snoop Dogg is filming a big-screen biopic.
Universal Pictures announced that the studio is developing a film about the life of Snoop Dogg, produced by the 51-year-old rapper.
The film will be written by Joe Robert Cole, co-writer of the two Black Panther films, and directed by Alan Hughes, producer of Threats II.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest studio I could work with who could understand what I was trying to portray on screen. The legacy, and the memory I’m trying to keep,” Snoopy said in a statement.
“It’s a perfect marriage. It’s a holy marriage, not holy macaroni.”
Universal previously adapted the story of the rap group NWA into the 2015 hit “Straight Outta Compton” and released the critically acclaimed Eminem biopic 8 Mile in 2002.
Cole said the studio “has shown that they can steer a movie like this to something special.”
Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures Entertainment Group, said she met Snoopy shortly after Snoop bought Death Row Records.
His acquisition was announced just days before Snoop’s Super Bowl halftime show with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J Blige and Kendrick Lamar in February.
Snoop Dogg rose to prominence in the West Coast rap scene in the early ’90s as a collaborator with Dr. Dre.
During his three-year career, he sold more than 35 million albums worldwide.
Snoop Dogg will be producing the film with Sara Ramaker and Hughes.
