One police officer was killed and another injured in a stabbing attack in Brussels on Thursday that officials suspect is terrorism-related. The only suspect was shot and later admitted to the hospital. U.S. Attorney’s Office Eric Van der Sypt told The Associated Press that the prosecutor’s office took over the case because they suspected the horrific angle of the stabbing.
“One of our patrols was attacked by a man with a knife,” police were quoted as saying in the Evening News. “Two police officers then called for reinforcements. An officer from another patrol struck the attacker with his gun.”

“Two injured detectives and the attacker were taken to hospital,” police added. One of the officers died after being stabbed in the neck.
Another newspaper, Het Laatste Nieuws, reported that the suspect went to the police station on Thursday morning and warned that he would kill an officer. The ACV police union also notified the incident in a Facebook post, adding that judicial authorities had not arrested him.
According to Belgian media, the attackers chanted “Allahu akbar” during the attack.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Crewe offered his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“Our police officers risk their lives every day to keep our citizens safe,” he said. “Today’s tragedy proves that again.”
Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden said “this type of violence against our people is unacceptable” and said she was coordinating with the Brussels mayor, police chief and security services to respond to the attack.
