Hydrogen remains the main topic of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP27.
UAE Renewable Energy Corporation Masdar A report was released today on the continent’s potential to become a hub for green hydrogen production.
What is green hydrogen? Hydrogen can be used as an energy source after being separated from water by electricity. When this electricity is powered by renewable energy sources such as solar or wind, it is called green hydrogen.
Africa’s potential: Masdar identifies several factors that indicate the potential of African countries to produce green hydrogen. The continent has abundant sunshine and land, and relative cost-effectiveness compared to other regions.
The Abu Dhabi-based company, which is owned by the UAE government, forecasts that Africa could produce 300 to 60 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2050. However, this will require an investment of $680 billion to $1.3 trillion. Currently, Africa as a whole accounts for only about 3 percent of global hydrogen project announcements, according to Masdar’s report.
Masdar’s idea is not alone. The Washington-based Brookings Institution released a report in May noting that Africa has excellent solar and wind resources and hydropower potential along the Nile and Congo rivers. The report further states that several European countries have expressed interest in developing the hydrogen sector in Africa.
challenge: However, it is difficult for Africa to become a hydrogen energy hub. The Brookings report also noted that more than half of Africa’s population has no electricity. Hydrogen also needs water in the face of growing water scarcity in Africa. In addition, Brookings said, shipping hydrogen by sea would add to the cost.
Why it matters: Gulf countries, including the UAE, are showing growing interest in green hydrogen. In May, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company signs green hydrogen Signed a cooperation agreement with British Petroleum.
Some of the hydrogen projects in the Gulf are located in Africa. In October, ACWA Power in Saudi Arabia signed a Green hydrogen deal with South Africa.
egypt and Morocco There is also a strong interest in green hydrogen.Saudi company Alfanar committed in August to start building a Green hydrogen plant in Egypt.
understand more: Green hydrogen is an established focus COP27 This year. Egypt announces another green hydrogen project at this week’s meeting. At the same time, there are more Fossil Fuel Industry Lobbyists More people attended this year than last year.
