History professor Samuel Hyde and his wife Sarah have combined their talents for a work of historical fiction, Rebel Bayou.
Samuel Hyde is the Lyon Ford Foundation Chair, Professor of History and Director of the Southeastern Louisiana Research Center at Southeastern Louisiana University. Sarah Hyde teaches at River Parishes Community College.
The book, published by the University of Louisiana Press, aims to shed light on the haunting and fascinating history of southeastern Louisiana and the surrounding environment after the Civil War, said Samuel Hyde.
“By the mid-1800s, the residents of the Florida parish, including Ready Wright’s family, had endured decades of instability. After multiple national hegemony, popular uprisings, horrific civil wars and ferocious night riders determined to continue the violence Afterwards, the community is the book’s synopsis saying that peace and ostensible unity are desperately needed. “From New Orleans to Mobile to Pensacola, the challenges of life in the Gulf South after the Civil War are fraught with voodoo and region-specific Among the other features, Ready and his loved ones face a risky world in search of elusive peace. “
“We’ve had people asking us for years to create a book that tells the story of the region in an easy-to-read format,” says Samuel Hyde. “This book provides an exciting insight into the dramatic story of our development and the adjoining region of the southern Gulf of Mexico, without the statistical analysis of our nonfiction books.”
“This book is designed to entertain and educate,” says Sarah Hyde. “The story stretches from the Parish of Florida to Mobile and even the Pensacola area. History buffs in Louisiana and throughout the southern Gulf of Mexico will find this story fascinating and thought provoking.”
Rebel Estuary will be released on Tuesday. The book’s release, including signings, is scheduled for Friday, November 18 at Cavalier House Booksellers, 100 N. Range Ave., Denham Springs, from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. The second signing will be held at Bayou Booksellers at 201 W. Thomas St. in Hammond on Saturday, November 19, along with a starry day and night celebration.The Hydes will sign the books from 12:30pm to 2pm
